As a Certified B Corporation, we get queries from various organizations who have an inclination to become Certified B Corps. Although B Corp website explains the process and other commonly asked questions, SAGE Sustainability is a certified B Corp and having gone through the journey, we are delighted to answer and support any query for an aspiring B Corp. As we hand hold organizations to become a certified B Corp, we are delighted to answer some of the commonly asked questions.
Why become a Certified B Corp? Is there a point going through the certification process. Is it just another certification process.
As per the B Corps official web page on why an organization should become certified, it can be to:
- Lead a movement
- Build relationships
- Attract talent
- Improve Impact
- Amplify Voice
- Protect Mission.
As a certified B Corp, I think that as a B Corp, the access to a framework that keeps you perpetually looking for more and more improvement focussed towards more and more inclusivity, transparency and impact is one of the key benefits.
No matter what you can do, there is always something more that can stretch your thinking to become more inclusive and transparent. Being a leader in your industry in your country is an incentive, however keeping the game up is what you require. So having a framework and being dynamic helps. Going through the assessment is an eye opener for many organizations despite them being completely committed to impact and transparency.
Second, you have an exclusive easy to build relationships with fellow B Corps. It is our experience that striking a first conversation and partnering with other B Corps gives you a kind of trust that no other contract can serve. We have personally benefitted for having the right partners. Certified B Corporations are a thriving community. There is an opportunity to be on the B hive, which is a thriving community of peers and leaders.
It helps you connect with B Corp Leaders anywhere in the world. It helps you network and connect with the relevant resources, partners, vendors, and sometimes there can be discounts available.
There may be a sense of exclusivity that B Corps have, however, it is to emphasize on inclusivity, transparency and impact. If this inspires others to join the club, we shall say ‘the more the merrier’.
B Corps is not for faint-hearted, it is for those visionary organizations which are bringing in the change they seek in the world. There is a sense of interdependency that is acknowledged and a pledge that suggests people and places matter. So, we urge organizations who think that they are already aligned with these values to join the community, network with other B Corp organizations and spread the values and benchmark against the best.
Using a B Corp logo with pride on your letterheads, your website and your business cards is another way to showcase what you stand for without stating anything about your purpose.
There are additional B Corp Leadership development programmes and networking events such as Champion’s Retreat that helps in networking in person. One can actively join a B Local group to share information in person.
One also gets an opportunity to explore and post opportunities for jobs on B Work to attract the best and like-minded talent.
There is also an opportunity to share stories on B Labs portal where best practices can be shared with other members.
